Fredericksburg Virginia History

Recorded history of the Fredericksburg area began with the one hundred and thirty mile trip which John Smith made up the Rappahannock from Chesapeake Bay to the falls in 1608. He noted that the Mannahoak Indians lived there. The German explorer, John Tederer, mapped the vicinity in 1670 when he traveled up the Rappahannock River and recorded many facts about the natural resources of the area.

In 1671, Governor William Berkeley issued a grant later called the "Leaseland" for 2,000 acres at the Fredericksburg site to John Buckner and Thomas Royston. The Virginia House of Burgesses directed that a fort be built at or near the falls of the Rappahannock to protect the sparse settlements of pioneers to the south from Indian attacks. It was from Buckner and Royston that William Livingston leased land in the early 1700's when he and his wife Sukey came to the wilderness. As one historian put it, they came "armed with ax, musket and frying pan and opened up a coffee house about a mile below the falls on land which became the central part of Fredericksburg when the town was chartered in 1727, named after the then Prince of Wales.

Between 1722 and 1729, Thomas Thornton secured a license to conduct an ordinary at the Ferry Landing and it was probably in existence when Fredericksburg was established. William Hunter, who owned the land, was bondsman for Thornton, who guaranteed to keep a clean, wholesome ordinary serving diets at one shilling each and not to sell anyone more drink than was necessary.

Colonel William Byrd, whose delightful writings greatly enriched the early records of the colonies, wrote in 1732, " Colonel Willts walked me about this town, Fredricksburg... 'I thought this be a commodious and beautiful situation for a town, with the advantage of a navigable river, and wholesome air, and the inhabitants are very few. Besides Colonel Willis, who is top man of the place, there are only one merchant, a tailor, a smithy, and an ordinary keeper; though I must not forget Mrs. Livingston, who acts here in the double capacity of a doctress and coffee woman, and were this a populous city, she is qualified to exercise 2 other callings...It is said that the courthouse and the Church are going to be built here, and then both religion and justice will help to enlarge the place."

Used extensively by historians and cartographers was the record of a Fredericksburg man who explored the Kentucky wilderness twenty years before the more publicized journey of Daniel Bootie. Valuable geographical and topographical data were compiled in "First Explorations of Kentucky. Journals of Dr. Thomas Walker, 1750."

Fredericksburg developed into an important commercial center during the next few decades. This was due to its location on the river and also on the main road between Virginia and the Middle Colonies. Trade was carried on with more than one hundred and twenty-five other ports. The staples were grain, flour and tobacco and by the beginning of the I500's the annual average sales were $4,000,000.

During the Revolutionary War, the town was of great strategic importance because of Fielding Lewis' Gunnery and Hunter's Iron Works. 'The head of the latter, James Hunter, is one of the forgotten heroes of history. He became postmaster for the southern part of the country when Benjamin Franklin was put in charge of the northern portion. He was Director of Public Works for Fredericksburg as well as the ironworks and there is much early documentation showing that he was an important figure in the successful struggle for independence. He incurred heavy debts financing arms and military equipment during the Revolution. When he died his creditor’s carried his stoic body and paraded it through the streets.

Because of its strategic location, Fredericksburg changed hands seven times during the Civil War. It was devastated by heavy bombardment which preceded the bloody battle in December, 1862, resulting in casualties on both sides amounting to almost ten per cent of the 200,000 troops involved in the engagement.

The present Courthouse was built in 1852 in the Victorian style on the site which has been used for the purpose since 1732.

The Information Center is located at the north end of Fredericksburg where snaps of historic places are available and there is a National Park Service Center Museum at Lafayette Boulevard and Sunken Road.
